Weily of Cullentry

The family of William Wiley II of Springfield and St Louis: Church of Ireland tenants at Heghlane, Big Cullentry, parish of Rathmolyon, County Meath, from before 1749; a Catholic branch made by William Weily C's two chapel marriages c.1838-41, his children christened in both churches; and the William who reached Illinois in 1857. Every fact below carries the record it rests on and a grade.

The standing hypothesis, 19 September 2026

William Weily C (c.1796 to 19 Jan 1850), born into the Church of Ireland house at Heghlane, who married Bridget Belagh and Margaret Flynn at the Catholic chapel and had his children christened in both churches, is William II's grandfather or father: Very likely. Reading A (William Wiley I, C's son by a first marriage, married a second Margaret Flynn and crossed in 1857 with the infant William II): Likely. Reading B (William II is the boy born at Cullentry on 12 Dec 1849, who crossed in 1857 aged seven without his parents): Possible. The sheets follow Reading A; the Two readings box in Part 2 sets both side by side with the four records that decide it.

The line of descent

Seven or eight generations, Cullentry to St Louis: Robert at generation 3 stands on one arm of the 1802 fork only. The connector shows how each father-son link is known: solid when a record names it, dashed when it is inferred from age, farm and spelling. Scroll the strip sideways for the American generations.

Read the badges on the people and the badges on the connectors separately. The people at the top of the strip are Certain: John Weily was buried on 4 April 1749 and his son John raised the stone over him in 1756, and both are in the parish register. That we come down from them is a different claim, and it is Likely, not certain: it rests on age, on the 1802 lists and on who afterwards held the farm, not on any record naming a father. John's birth “about 1680” is arithmetic from the “aged 69” cut on his stone, and nothing at all is fixed about the family before that stone; where the house came from is on What We Still Don't Know. Generation 4 is a fork: William C's father was John Wiley (c.1766-1864) or George Wiley (c.1750-1836), the two Rathmolyon heads of 1802 whose households each held a boy William. John is the likelier, but he was born about ten years after John junior died, so he cannot be John junior's son: on that arm the generation between them is Robert Weily (bapt. 1746, bur. 1802), the map's tenant of Heghlane, and William C is John junior's great-grandson. Take the George arm instead and Robert drops out of the line altogether - George is John junior's own son, and William C is his grandson. That is why Robert's rung is drawn dashed on both sides. Under Reading B generation 5 (William I) drops out and William II is William C's son.

The whole family in outline

Every person on the sheets below, indented under their parents: the same tree a chart would draw, in a form that survives a phone screen. Dates in brackets are the person's own; "c." means the year is worked back from an age on a stone or in a register and can be out by several years. Red is the Catholic branch, blue the Church of Ireland house. Click a name to jump to their full entry, or a sheet number to jump to the family group.

Part 1 - Before 1802: the Heghlane house

The 1749 gravestone, the Rathmolyon register index (baptisms from 1744, burials from 1749), the estate map of c.1771-98 and the 1802 Protestant parishioners' lists. Links marked inferred rest on age and the succession to the farm; the register images (NAI microfilm MFCI 51) have not been read.

Sheet 2

John Weily (c.1722 - 1756)

Group: Likely

John junior died on 15 February 1756, so read the two groups of children differently. The first four are baptisms entered in the Rathmolyon register between 1744 and 1754, the only Weily baptisms in the book before 1794; the register does not name their parents, and they are given to John junior because he was the Weily householder at Heghlane in those years. The second four have no baptism at all: their birth years are worked backwards from the age written at their burial or death ('aged 86', 'aged 80', 'aged 76'), which is why they are printed as 'c.1750', 'c.1755', 'c.1760'. Those ages are rounded and frequently overstated, so a 'c.1760' is not evidence that a child was born after his father died - it is evidence that the man was old. Michael's is the one that will not fit however it is read: see the note on his card. Wife not named in any record.

Born four years after John junior died. His only date is the 'aged 76' written at his burial in 1836; ages at burial in this register are rounded and often overstated (William A's says 96 for 84). Either he was born by 1756 and the age is wrong, or he is not John junior's son but a nephew or cousin. He is kept here because he held Heghlane land in 1825 and was one of the four Rathmolyon heads of 1802.

Church of Ireland by birth; married twice in the Catholic chapel (Bridget Belagh c.1838, Margaret Flynn c.1841), the mixed marriages that made the Catholic branch. Reading S: the five Rathmolyon baptisms of 1842-50 name the mother 'Eleanor Weily', read as an index or clerk artefact (the children were probably keyed to William B x Eleanor's family in the Heritage Centre database); the register page (NAI microfilm MFCI 51) decides. Reading T, two families with the same four names in the same years: Possible (Low-Medium). Father: John or George of the 1802 list (Likely John, whose 1802 household included a boy William), not William A. Named 'farmer, deceased' at Grace's marriages 1876 and 1881; 'William Wiley, farmer' without 'deceased' at Michael's marriage 1870, read as an omission. 'William Junior' of the 1825 tithe was William B, not him.

A named Protestant alternative exists: William F, b. 17 Mar 1829 at Cullinter, son of John Weily x Maria Heaps, with no later record (Possible). Son of William Weily C by a first, unrecorded (Catholic) marriage c.1820-37: Likely (the verdict's Medium). The cost: nothing of that first family is in either parish register, though the same father christened his 1842-49 children in the parish church. A named Protestant alternative exists: William F, b. 17 Mar 1829 at Cullinter, son of John Weily x Maria Heaps, with no later record (Possible). Already in the main tree ('William Wiley II'). Add the Irish birthplace: County Meath (Cullentry or Ballin, Rathmolyon). TWO READINGS of his parents (decision D1, 19 Sep 2026). Reading A (Likely; the case file's base case): son of William I (b. c.1830-36, William C's son by a first marriage) and a second Margaret Flynn, born c.1855-57, crossed in 1857 as an infant with his parents. Reading B (hypothesis H22 Form B, Low-Medium, 2026-09-12): William II IS the William born 12 Dec 1849 to William C and Margaret Flynn, who crossed in 1857 aged seven without his parents; his American ages (25 in 1878, 28 in 1880, 45 in 1900, 56 in 1913) would be understated by 3-7 years. What both agree on: born at Cullentry between 1849 and 1857 to a William Wiley and a Margaret Flynn of that townland; William Weily C (c.1796-1850) is his grandfather (A) or his father (B): Very likely.

Two readings

Who William II's parents were

Shared ground: Very likely

What both readings agree on: William II was born at Cullentry between 1849 and 1857 to a William Wiley and a Margaret Flynn of that townland; he arrived in America in 1857; William Weily C (c.1796 to 19 Jan 1850) is his grandfather (A) or his father (B); Grace, Michael and Robert are his aunt and uncles (A) or his sister and brothers (B). The house, the Catholic branch, the Flynns, the Grace to Byrne to Kenny DNA chain and the Y-DNA plan are the same under both. The sheets above follow Reading A; the notes on William II and on William (1849) carry Reading B.

Reading A - the case file's base case

William I and a second Margaret Flynn

Likely

William II is the son of William Wiley I (b. c.1830-36, William C's son by a first, unrecorded marriage) and a second Margaret Flynn of the Ballin or Clonmowley Flynns, born c.1855-57 (29 Jan 1857 by the 1913 certificate), and crossed in 1857 as an infant with his parents.

For: the American family was Catholic from its first record (St Joseph's, Springfield, 1878), which a Catholic-raised son of William C gives without a conversion; the 1854 valuation splits one 80-acre holding between "William" (lot 3 + Ballin 8) and "Margaret" (lots 4, 18 + Ballin 10), a widow and her dead husband's adult son; the two latest age statements (1900, 1913) fit 1855-57.

Cost: no record of William I or of a Margaret (Flynn) Wiley exists in America (1860 and 1870 indexes negative, 1880 Springfield block, directories, no death or probate) or in Ireland after 1857; no baptism of a William son of a William 1820-40 in either parish register; and it needs a second William Wiley marrying a second Margaret Flynn in the same townland a decade after the first.

Reading B - hypothesis H22 Form B, 12 Sep 2026

William II is the boy born 12 Dec 1849

Possible

William II IS the William born 12 Dec 1849 to William C and Margaret Flynn. His father died when he was five weeks old; his mother remarried John Flynn of Ballin in 1854 and stayed at Cullentry until her death in 1877. The boy crossed in 1857 aged seven without his parents, with or to kin (a William Flynn, labourer, was on Reynolds Street, Springfield, in the 1857-58 directory), and understated his age in America by 3 to 7 years: 25 in 1878, 28 in 1880, 45 in 1900, 56 in 1913.

For: it removes William I and the second Margaret Flynn, whom no record anywhere names; the parents' names in the Alton register match a documented Cullentry couple exactly; the 1849 William vanishes from Meath; his children's names Margaret (1881) and Robert John (1888); the Kenny matches (39 and 55 cM) sit nearer the full-sibling expectation than the half-uncle one.

Cost: the two latest age statements, and the shape of the age series (his birth year moves five years later across thirty-five years); "Gulielmi Wiley" at Alton must be a dead father. Grade Low-Medium in the verdict, level with or just below Reading A once the ages are seen whole.

What decides it

  1. The mother's name on the 1842-50 Rathmolyon register pages (NAI microfilm MFCI 51: baptisms 10 Jul 1842, 16 Oct 1843, 1 May 1845, 29 Jun 1848, 2 Jan 1850; burial 19 Jan 1850). "Margaret" makes Reading S certain and both readings stand on it; "Eleanor" revives Reading T and unpicks the exact dates.
  2. The Kenny testers' generation below Catherine Byrne Kenny (d. Chicago 1973): shared DNA near 40 cM for grandchildren or 20 cM for great-grandchildren favours B (full siblings); near 13 or 7 cM favours A.
  3. The Valuation Office revision book for Cullentry lot 3, 1855-70: who follows "William Wiley" in 1857-58. A Flynn or Margaret means the stepson left (A); a Wiley of John's or Joseph's family means William F left.
  4. Any American record of a William Wiley I alive after 1857: an 1860 or 1870 census household with a wife Margaret, a death, probate or burial. One such record proves A; none has been found (1860 and 1870 sweeps closed negative, 12-14 Sep 2026).

Part 3 - The Church of Ireland house at Cullentry and Ballynaskea

William B's house, which held the Cullentry farm to 1976: John of Maryville and Charles of Cullintra House, their children to Charles Watson Weily (1897-1976); John x Maria Heaps, parents of William F, the Protestant alternative for William I; George of Isaacstown; Robert of Castletown; and the Ballynaskea branch that sent Elizabeth Allen to Pennsylvania and Jervis to Tasmania. Cousins of the emigrant, worth entering because the civil-index, census and Find a Grave hints fire on them at once.

'William F': the named Protestant alternative for William I of Springfield (Possible; the verdict's Low-Medium). For him: the missing Catholic baptism of William I, and a house that sent Michael the cooper to America c.1828, Elizabeth Allen to Pennsylvania 1859, Jervis to Tasmania 1858. Against: the American family was Catholic from its first record; the 1854 valuation splits one 80-acre holding between William and Margaret as widow and adult son; and John and Joseph (F's father and brother) hold their own lots 7-11 where F would be expected.
